Directories and How They Can
Help Your SE Rankings
In this topic, I'll cover the importance of submitting
your website to Directories to get a higher search ranking.
Search engines and directories average more than
300 million searches a day and are
the main way Internet users find Websites. If you want Web users to
find your Website, then you want to be listed with the major search
engines, and if you want to increase your SE rankings, then you
should also be listed in many Directories as well. Why is this
important?
Directories are a Great source of One-Way links
that point back to your website.
What is a Directory?
Search
Engines and Directories serve different purposes and are different.
Search engines have spiders that crawl websites, collecting
information from their web pages to be put in a large database.
This data is accessed when a user specifies a keyword in a search.
This is a dynamic search operation.
A Directory is a static set up. Directories like
Yahoo! or Open
Directory Project are a collections of links that point to Websites.
These links are grouped
into logical categories such as "Business, News, Government, Entertainment,
Health and Reference".
The Website links that are added to these categories may be reviewed
by real people, rather than a program, before being added.
Although many directories use automated processes where a link that
is submitted to the directory may be added without a human reviewing
it.
The Yahoo Directory is the most important and most popular Web Directory.
Yahoo! uses people to evaluate whether
a site is good enough for the Yahoo! Directory, so getting listed in
the Yahoo! Directory is not easy. To try and get listed, you submit
your details to the Directory. Your information will be reviewed
and then someone decides whether your site gets listed, and it could
take several months before you hear from them.
The Open Directory Project is the next
most important Directory to get into. Many other directories,
including Google, use ODP's information
for their directory.
 To
get into the Yahoo! Directory, as a minimum, everything on your site
must work, it should be up to standards and the site must offer something
of value to the Yahoo! Directory users. What's the advantage of
being listed in the Yahoo! Directory? Well, if you get listed,
the Directory will have a link that points to your site (an inbound
link) and a link from Yahoo! is like
"Internet Gold".
You'll receive a very high search ranking for being listed in the Yahoo!
Directory.
Getting Links from Directories
 For search engine rankings, a one-way link (even from a directory)
pointing to your website is much better than a two-way link (or
reciprocal link), where
two websites are pointing back to each other. Why? This
is because most search engine algorithms give
more weight to one-way links than two-way links.
They
do this because the SE writers feel that if you have a one-way link
pointing to your website, that means another website
believes that your website has enough quality
information and is important enough to point to.
Whereas, if both websites have links that are pointing to each
other, then SE writers figure that you traded links in order to build
up your inbound link quantity.
Getting listed in directories is just
the first step in having a high ranking Website. Besides
Keyword and On-Page Optimization that
you can perform to increase the ranking of your Web pages, the
NUMBER ONE thing that will have the
biggest impact on your search rankings is to have a large number of
inbound links from other Quality Websites pointing to your pages. This
is called Off-Page Optimization.
