When people use search engines, even though their search results may return them thousands of Websites and Web pages, most will only look at the first 30 to 50 links. Some people don't even go beyond the first page or two, so getting a good ranking by the search engines will make your site more visible to people and will help them find it.

The basic fundamentals of SEO works for all search engines but there are some differences between how the different spiders crawl sites and how the different search engines return results.

Two Kinds of Optimization

There are basically two kinds of SEO, On-page and Off-page Optimizations.

1. Off-Page Optimization consists of all of the ranking factors that happen Away From or Off Of your web pages like:

Which websites link to you
The number of websites linking to you
The Google PageRank of the websites linking to you
The page title of the websites linking to you
The anchor text used in the links linking to you
The number and type of links linking to the websites that are linking to you
The number of outbound links on the websites that are linking to you
The total number of links on the websites that are linking to you
Whether or not the websites linking to you are deemed to be an Authority Website or Content Related Website by the search engines.

Most of these factors you don't have any control over, but the ones you do are:

Picking which Websites you would like to have backlinks (inbound links) from and
The anchor text that they use in those backlinks.

2. On-Page Optimization consists of the things you can do to your Web pages to make them more search engine friendly. These include things like:
