Website Design and Building

Should You Do It Yourself Or Hire Someone?

Have you decided if you are going to hire someone to set up your Website or are you going to build it yourself?  There are advantages and disadvantages to either way, but it will probably boil down to two things:
Time and Money:
Which one do you have the most of?

IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY - 5 Things You Should Know:

If you don't have the time and energy to build and maintain your own Website and you can afford to hire a Professional Web Designer to do it for you, here are 5 things your should know about a company before you sign a contract:

  1. Money. Do you have the money to pay someone to build you a Web site.Check With Others:
Talk with other people or companies who have hired a Web Designer and find out who the Designer was and whether the customer was satisfied.
  2. Get References:
Get references from the Designer and contact the references. See if they were satisfied and if they had any complaints.
  3. Know What You Will Get for Your Money:
It's your money and you want to spend it wisely. Find out what the designer will give you for your money.  Compare what they have to offer with at least one other company to make sure their prices are reasonable. Costs can run anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a couple of no frills pages, to thousands of dollars for more complex sites.
  4. Look for Experience:
Make sure the Designer has at least a couple of years of experience.  Looking at websites he or she has designed will give you an indication of their quality and abilities.  The longer a designer has worked, the more professional their websites will look. If you don't see any site layouts that you like, look for someone else.
  5. Will You Do the Maintenance:
Find out how much maintenance will cost after the site has been completed and whether you can do the maintenance yourself.  Doing the maintenance yourself can save you a bundle of money over the long run, but you will have to be able to work with HTML code.

IF YOU HAVE THE TIME - 8 Things You Will Need To Do:

Graphic of person with timeIf you can't afford to pay someone but you have the time and energy to learn some things and build your own website, then here are eight things that your will be spending time on:

  1. Picking a hosting company and a Website name.
  2. Acquiring and learning a Web building tool or program.
  3. Acquiring and learning a Graphics program.
  4. Learning basic HTML.
  5. Acquiring or creating the graphic you will need for your site.
  6. Planning Out and building your site.
  7. Maintaining your site.  Making changes and fixing problems.
  8. Keeping your site Fresh.  Plan on spending time updating your site with new information in order to keep it fresh and current.

Designing and building your own Website can be a rewarding challenge and even fun.

WHAT IF YOU DON'T HAVE EITHER TIME OR MONEY?:

If you don't have the time and don't have the money, then you will have to be a bit more creative.

Do you have a friend who knows how to build Websites who owes you a favor or with whom you could barter?  (Maybe you could mow their lawn for the summer or cook dinner for them for a week.)

Use your imagination, but just keep in mind that you usually "Get What You Pay For"  so don't have high expectations.
